Centennial Lecture: The Progeny of Jonathan Edwards New Haven Museum and Historical Society

New Haveners are generally familiar with the life and career of Jonathan Edwards. A graduate of Yale at the age of 17, he became a brilliant theologian and philosopher, whose famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, made him a leading figure of the Great Awakening. One of Yale’s ten original residential colleges is named for him, the Yale University Press has issued many volumes of his Works in book form, and the Jonathan Edwards Center is housed at the Yale Divinity School.

Less well known today are his son, Pierpont Edwards, and grandson, Henry W. Edwards, both of whom were active and important figures on the Connecticut legal and political scene from the late 18th Century into the 19th Century. Pierpont served, among other things, as United States District Judge, and Henry as Governor of the State.

The lecture, to be delivered by Charles A. Heckman, Professor Emeritus of Law at Quinnipiac University, will focus on the career of Pierpont Edwards. You will learn of his relationship with his nephew, Aaron Burr, who was only six years his junior, of his leadership in establishing the Jeffersonian Republican Party in Connecticut, and of his important role in drafting Connecticut’s first Constitution. You will also learn something about his personal life, which was marked by some rather glaring transgressions.

Snacks and beverages provided, cost is $25 NHCBA & Historical Society members, $30 Guests. RSVP to the NHCBA office at 562-9652.
