Appeals 101: A Primer


Speakers: Jeffrey R. Babbin, Esq. Wiggin and Dana

                 Joseph N. Schneiderman, Esq. Attorney and Counselor at Law


Learn the mechanics of an appeal, including how to recognize an appealable event in the trial court and then appropriately and timely respond to it.  Understand the basics of preliminary motions, the preargument conference, submitting your brief, and presenting the appellate oral argument.  An interactive discussion for practitioners infrequently pursuing appeals or needing a refresher course.

Topics covered will include:

• Knowing when to appeal

• How to initiate the appeal

• How to preserve an issue for appeal in the trial court

• Preliminary motions

•The preargument conference and transfer of appeals

•The basics of formatting and preparing your brief and appendix and obtaining oral argument

CLE credits: It is the opinion of the NHCBA that this activity qualifies for 2 hours toward your annual CLE requirement in Connecticut.
