LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Criteria

  • A member in good standing of the New Haven County Bar Association for the last five years.
  • In practice for at least forty years.
  • Has made an outstanding contribution to his/her area of law, in that he/she is held in high esteem and regard by the client, the judiciary and the attorneys at large.
  • Practices with the highest ethical standards as well as the highest professional standards of conduct to client, peers and judiciary.

YALE SAPPERN CIVILITY AWARD

Purpose

To honor and recognize a New Haven area lawyer or court staff person who exhibits and/or embodies the kind and helpful qualities found in the person and work of Yale Sappern, the Administrative Supervisor of the Family Division of the Superior Court, J.D. at New Haven, from 1966 to 1997. The intent of the award is to increase and encourage civility in our courthouse and legal community.

 

Criteria

The honoree should possess the attributes shown by Attorney Yale Sappern throughout his career to those with whom he worked or encountered. Specifically, these are:

  • Encourages new staff or attorneys.
  • Is patient with everyone.
  • Is courteous to clients, attorneys, court and staff.
  • Gives others the sense of importance in that they listen and give guidance.
  • Sees substance over formality.
  • Strives for excellence.
  • Is candid and honest towards the Court and to colleagues.
  • Sees the importance of others more than the importance of self.
  • Helps colleagues without drawing attention to self.
